Our first encounter with our initial client for Acholi Cultural Tours in Gulu was from Italy. We met Franciose, a mathematics teacher from Italy.
Adam is a senior guide from Kampala. He reached out to Grime Safaris Uganda after a referral from our first client. The scheduled trip was Valentine’s in the Wild Trip in 2021 with Matia from Kampala. Adam tour guide gave us all the detailed information Franciose needed for this amazing Acholi Cultural Tours in Gulu.
According to Adam, Franciose read about many African Culture’s norms and traditions in books. He learnt about the Acholi people of Northern Uganda. During this time of visit he first visited other national parks e.g Kidepo Valley national park and did Karamojong Cultural Experience then later on, came for Acholi Cultural Tours with Grime Safaris.
Acholi Cultural Tour with Grime Safaris, Franciose and tour guide Adam started at 8:00am. We had a stopover at an Acholi Village homestead which had a woman at 101 years old. It was an interesting moment of interaction between our client and the community member. He took a few photographs as we proceeded to the specific village we were heading to.
We reached at exactly 9:15am at Acholi Homestead where we had arranged all the Acholi Cultural Tour Experiences. We first met with our community tour guide, Otto, who is in charge of organizing everything in the village. Otto organizes all the artisans in charge of Pottery, Basketry, Acholi Traditional Dancers, and Chefs for Acholi Foods preparation. He also manages the person in charge of Moo Yaa making (shea nut oil making), among others.

During Acholi Village visit on Acholi tours with Grime Safaris, we have series of young men who are weavers of various baskets in Acholi example; Odero, Aduku, Kikabo among others.
Most raw materials for making these baskets in Acholi comes from Borassus Palm, Grass, Swamp palm leaves among others. In Acholi Villages, most craftmanship activities are done after work in the farm, during leisure time in the evenings or during dry seasons when there is fewer garden works.

Our client Franciose got a chance to pound the Yaa roasted nuts, traditionally Yaa oil is prepared only in the afternoon for some reasons and the process completed by only those who participated from the very start.
Moo yaa also known as the Sheanut Oil is used as Cosmetic and really good for babies because it’s organic, Stomach Cleaner and Edible oil with great aroma.
The Tour ended at around 3:00pm after all the activities were done, we headed to Gulu Craft Village to select some souvenirs, Adam tour guide and the tourist then proceeded to Murchison’s Falls National Park for their other tours.
